Question: when should I start seeds?

This question has a LOT of variables to it but we will keep it simple (no low tunnels or high tunnels). We use a last frost date of May 25th ish - why because we have always had a frost around that date (minus last year) despite them changing our zone.

We then count backwards by weeks from our last frost date. We then look over our seed list (both flowers and veggies) and group them according to starting dates.

BIG HELPFUL HINT: DO NOT START EARY - it is REALLY easy to feel behind and start to get anxious when following farms/homesteads and start seeds too early. For example we wait until April1st before we think of starting our tomatoes.

As impressive as BIG seedlings may look often times they are stressed by their large size and small containers (unless you pot things up regularly). We much prefer starting seeds a little on the "late side" and planting out slightly smaller but healthy plants. This also saves us room. We could start sooner and pot plants up but we simply do not have the space on our shelves (or in our house) to pot everything up.

By holding off we typically are able to keep everything in our small soil blocks or 72 cell trays until they are ready to go straight outside. Exceptions being tomatoes - we do eventually move those up to solo cups before they hit the garden.

Michigan has a lot of diversity in its last frost regions - I have friends near Grand Rapids who typically are free of frost a week or two before us and friends near Jackson that are the same. HOWEVER, as any Michigander knows - our weather can be a bit of a wild card so we error on the side of planting slightly late then risking losing a lot of plants or only planting what we know we can cover in the event of a surprise frost.

Part 2 Beginnings - Tips for starting small but growing plenty

1.) Vertical growing saves space - you can grow cantaloupe, pole beans, cucumbers, and several others vertically. We grew pole beans both along our fence and in our pole bean tee-pee that we built out of sticks (Pic #1 & 2)

2.) Direct sow as much as you can - we direct sowed almost everything except peppers and tomatoes. Those we started in our window BUT ALSO you can find them at your local green house

3.) Use wide row and compact gardening techniques. During the peak of our season our garden was a jungle with small walking paths only). Each row was about 2' wide with a small 1' walking path. Things like carrots, spinach and lettuce we would sprinkle over their designated area.

4.) We filled in as many gaps as we could with flowers (mainly zinnias and bachelor buttons) or random vegetables. The more we planted of what we wanted the less weeds 😉

5.) For small compact gardens Stirrup Hoes will be your best friend for weeding!

Side note - one thing if you are able that I would spend extra on is quality seed starting soil IF you are starting inside. Our favorite is Dairy Doo Seed Starter 101.

STAY AWAY FROM biodegradable (cardboard) seed starter blocks. You see them often in stores. We have consistently had terrible luck with those and very unhealthy root development (I also have had many friends struggle with the biodegradable little pots too).

Part 1 - Beginnings... We are sharing a bit of ours - LONG before any vision of flowers and u-picks. We grew food to ensure quality produce and to save money.

SO many times I hear people say they do not have enough money to garden or fancy tools. GUESS WHAT - you do not need a lot to start small. We did not get lights or seed shelves until we moved to the farm. Prior to that we used our EAST facing window (yes, you read that right not even a south facing window). On days that were over 60 we would move the seedlings outside. The key was to NOT START SEEDLINGS TOO EARLY - example we waited until April to start our tomato seeds.

We lived in a subdivision, tilled up a small plot (if I remember correctly it was about 10' wide and 20' long), we direct sowed most of our seeds and started a few of them inside using an empty lettuce container and one 72 cell tray). We did not amend our soil or buy compost and had some of our most abundant and best gardens at that house!

Another great way to start a garden is thru containers if you do not have access to a tiller. Grow bags are relatively inexpensive and you can grow an abundance of food and flowers for you to enjoy!

You can make gardening as expensive as you would like or on the flip side you can have an abundance and not spend a fortune!

We made it home and had a wonderful time celebrating my brother's wedding and enjoying some time with family and friends!

Now we are back to all things seed starting! We are going to start a series of fun facts and seed starting tips! If you have any questions we would love to answer!

We are back from our January break….kind of… T

We are back from our January break....kind of... Today we are moving up lisianthus up and eucalyptus to bigger cells and then hopping on a plane for my little brothers wedding!!!

We love our soil blocks but moving this up will ensure they will stay moist and happy while we are soaking up some 🌞 on the beach.

We also have several varieties of godetia, sweet William, red berry yarrow, and Canterbury bells started. It will be so fun to return home to a shelf full of hope filled seedlings!

We both have some pretty major flying anxiety all prayers will be gladly welcomed! See you soon with some regular seedlings updates, fun facts, and seed starting tips!

We interrupt our January social media break with some exciting news! We have our first little seedling to emerge for our 2025 season! It's a little eucalyptus. We also are experimenting with starting Lisianthus by seed (new to us) and keep checking daily for our first little sprout (we did order ~ 400 Lizzy plugs in 4 different colors too in case our seedling experiment is a bust).

We are thoroughly enjoying the snowy winter and having some ice to skate on! We will soon be starting our cool season flowers with the hopes of moving them into some low tunnels mid/end of April!

We truly found balance in our flow this year and found ourselves not as burnt out as previous years. We are simplifying our subscriptions to one size - it will be larger than our regular size and smaller than are large size.

With that being said we are going to keep our focus on u-pick, events, and subscriptions. Like last year we will sporadically still open the stand but it won’t be consistent during the peak of our season. Subscriptions ensure:

• no rushing to the stand to find out it is sold out!

Happy almost New Year! Before we take our January

Happy almost New Year! Before we take our January social media break I wanted to share some exciting things (the last few days my way too excited garden planning brain has kicked in). Also I can't believe it's our 5th season bringing flowers to the area!!!!

- ALL seeds are ordered (although..I'm sure more will find their way to the farm)
- We are starting to make signs! This year all flowers will be labeled in the field with some helpful tips.
- We are planning to add a third U-Pick option for the week this year and these days we plan to keep fixed so you can plan your visits accordingly!
- We are working on planning out a few classes and events - we would love to hear your ideas!
- During the month of January we will be updating our website as well as still responding to emails and messages. We have wedding spots and private U-Pick party dates starting to fill up. Send us a message to reserve yours!
- I feel so excited about this year and we are entering into it with a calm and peace. We are going thru all our notes and feedback and hoping to have a pretty epic U-Pick this year (as long as deer, ground hogs, insects, and bunnies play nicely...)

What a beautiful morning <3 This is one of many reasons why I say winter is my favorite time of year. You catch it at the right time and it puts on a beautiful show if you are willing to slow down and look close enough <3

My favorite part of making the soap is the big rev

My favorite part of making the soap is the big reveal when we pop them out of the molds! I tried using flamingo celosia today. It seems to be holding onto its color well.

Flowers that worked best:
- calendula
- gomphrena (dark colored ones)
- herbs
- sweet Annie
- explosion grass, flax, jewels of opar
- celosia (some not all varieties)

Strawflower I was super excited about but it consistently reacted with the chemicals in the soap and would turn almost black!

Some people asked about candles and that's still in my vision. They seemed to have a bit more of a learning curve and figuring out scents. I didn't want to rush the process so I'm hoping those will be a late winter/spring release :D

Goat Milk Soap that is mildly scented with lemon and lavender essential oils from Doterra and 100% cotton scrubbies. The clear layer with our farm grown dried flowers is an organic coconut and glycerin layer.

We are pretty cautious with what we put on our skin over here so I spent several hours researching ingredients and searching for an organic goat milk soap base that was clean free from "yucky" additives.

Soap bar = $6 each (each bar is approx. 3.3 oz)
Circle Scrubby = $6 each, (approx. 5" diameter)

We have two other goat milk based soaps in the works that will hopefully be ready by the weekend...

Are you missing the smell of flowers??? We are thinking of trying our hand at some Beeswax candles sprinkled with dried herbs and flowers collected from our farm....possibly some soap?

All candles would be made from quality beeswax and DoTERRA essential oils as well as our free from yucky chemical flowers.

I was thinking of starting with candles - 4oz size and 7oz size.

Is this a YAY or a NAY?

My hope would be to have the first batch of 15-30 candles ready by the end of next week which would make for a perfect gift for your holiday gatherings :D

We are kicking out some things that didn't thrive last year. I love this active rest phase of planning and dreaming of next year while enjoying hot chocolate and slow days with the kids 😀
